Progress Energy looks to move poultry poop from chicken coup to power loop
April 14, 2011 7:54 AM Web Exclusives By Associated Press A company is planning to build a power plant in North Carolina which will convert poultry waste into energy. Progress Energy Inc. said Wednesday it has signed a contract to work with Poultry Power USA on the project. The plant will be built in Biscoe and is scheduled to begin operations in two years. It will use 350,000 tons of poultry litter per year. Poultry Power plans to turn the waste into a biogas that will burn inside a boiler. The heat will create steam to turn a turbine and generate electricity. Raleigh-based Progress Energy says the project will help the company meet North Carolina standards for renewable energy. The company says it is the state's first poultry-to-biogas plant
